Almost every serious decoration piece sits on a stone base — and the base is where corners get cut. Five checks separate real marble from cast composite.
1. Veining should be irregular
Natural marble veining never repeats. If the pattern looks printed or tiles across the surface, it is composite. Compare against genuine bases such as Golden Heron.
2. Edges and thickness
A quality base is 20 mm or thicker with cleanly finished edges — no chipping, no soft rounded corners from moulding.
3. The joint
Look at where the figure meets the stone. It should be pinned or seated, not simply glued with visible adhesive around the seam.
4. Temperature and weight
Marble is cold to the touch and stays cold. Composite warms to your hand within seconds.
5. Underside felt
A finished base has felt or cork underneath to protect furniture — a small sign the maker cared. Pieces like Ascension and Bubble are finished this way. Care tips are in our material care guide.
