Pakistan's climate is demanding on decorative materials: coastal humidity in Karachi, dust through Lahore and Islamabad summers, and hard water almost everywhere. None of it is a problem with a simple routine.
Marble and stone
Dust weekly with a dry microfibre cloth. Clean only with warm water and a drop of pH-neutral soap — never vinegar, lemon or any acidic cleaner, which etches the surface permanently. Blot spills immediately; marble stains through absorption, not on the surface.
Re-seal stone table tops once a year with a penetrating stone sealer.
Brass and bronze
Decide first whether you want patina or shine. Patina protects the metal and, on collectible bronze, is part of the value — in that case, dust only.
For polished brass, wipe with a soft dry cloth weekly and use a dedicated brass polish two to three times a year. In humid coastal air, a thin coat of microcrystalline wax slows tarnishing considerably.
Crystal and glass
Hard water is the enemy. Clean with distilled water and a little isopropyl alcohol, then dry immediately with a lint-free cloth to avoid mineral spotting. Never put decorative crystal in a dishwasher.
Fabric, feather and textured pieces
Use a hairdryer on cool setting or a soft brush to lift dust from feathered and textured surfaces. Keep them out of direct sun, which fades colour faster than anything else in a Pakistani summer.
