Sculptures are the hardest decor category to style because there is no function to guide you. These five rules are what interior designers fall back on, and they work in any room.
1. Scale up, then stop
One large object beats three small ones. If a shelf or console looks busy, remove rather than add — the piece you keep will look twice as valuable.
2. Group in odd numbers
Threes and fives read as arrangements; twos and fours read as symmetry, which flattens visual interest. If you must use a pair, separate them across the room instead of pairing them on one surface.
3. Protect negative space
The empty space around a sculpture is part of it. Leave at least a hand's width of clear surface on every side. Crowding is the single fastest way to make an expensive object look cheap.
4. Light it deliberately
A sculpture with no dedicated light disappears after sunset. Place a table lamp beside it, aim a picture light above it, or set it where a floor lamp throws a long shadow across its surface.
5. Layer three heights
On any surface, aim for a tall element, a mid element and a low element — a sculpture, a stack of books, a shallow bowl. The eye travels the triangle and the arrangement feels finished.
- Tall: sculpture, lamp or vase
- Mid: framed piece, box or object
- Low: bowl, tray or books
